    CORRESPONDENCE:
    From: Angie
    Date: Fri, 17 May 2002

I am pretty sure the first Eisenzimmer was named John.

    Descendants of John Eisenzimmer

    Notes for JOHN EISENZIMMER 1:
John was born in a small town in Germany. Name ...

JOHN 2 EISENZIMMER (EISENZIMMER1) was born in Germany. He married ELIZABETH BURKHARD. She was born in Germany.

The oldest sons, Balzer and Leopold left the family behind and went to the United States, which they entered through Ellis Island, New York. (Ellis Island has no record of them that I could find. Balzer's Daughter, Regina Eisenzimmer Steffan, (Angie's Mom) said Balzer had an eye infection and he was to be sent back. Somehow they got into New York and then to ND. What Balzer had was pinkeye, which cleared up. Back then they didn't know anything about pinkeye.)

The government put many of these immigrants on trains and sent them inland. Balzer and Leopold ended up in Devils Lake, ND, and found work at Calvary Square in Ft. Totten, just south of Devils Lake.

I can only imagine the bravery that these two young men must have had to do all this!

They eventually saved enough money to bring their parents and other brothers to the United States. All arrived safely and traveled to Devils Lake, except for John who stayed in New York to work. (There was a rumor that he met with foul play and was never heard of again.)

Children of JOHN EISENZIMMER and ELIZABETH BURKHARD are:
    2. i. BALZER3 EISENZIMMER, b. August 24, 1881, Russia; d. Abt. June 29, According to card.

    4. iv. MIKE EISENZIMMER, b. Not sure 1892 1893.

    vi. JOHN EISENZIMMER, b. Russia.
    Notes for JOHN EISENZIMMER:
Born 1897 The baby of the family. He stayed in New York to work. The rest of the family went to Devils Lake, ND. Family thought he was killed, foul play.

Balzer gave the date of Joe?s birth, listed as the closest memory of the event. (this info was given Dec.16, l941.) Nov. 30th birth, school records from Ramsey County list his birthday as the 23rd. Some other say 11-18-1912

He stepped on a mine somewhere. Was thrown up and hit the ground. No obvious wounds. After this he would wake up in the mornings with swollen feet. It got bad enough he went to the Dr. (Red Cross he said). By the time he got up and dressed and made it over to the Dr. the swelling would be down. They sent him back, saying he was trying to get out of the war. He didn't care much for the Red Cross. When he did get back, he was put into the hospital, Hq.
