    • OWNERS OF Rancho Pescadero (Barreto) - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rancho_Pescadero_(Barreto)
"Rancho Pescadero (also called "Punta del Cipreses") was a 4,426-acre (17.91 km) Mexican land grant in present day Monterey County, California given in 1836 by Governor Nicolas Gutierrez to Fabian Barreto. Pescadero means fishing place in Spanish. The grant extended along the Pacific coast from Rancho Punta de Pinos and Seal Rocks south to Carmel by the Sea and encompassed present day Pebble Beach, California.
Fabian Barreto, a Mexican who came to Monterey in 1827 married Maria del Carmen Garcia Barreto Madariaga in 1833. Barreto received the one square league grant in 1836, but died in 1841. His widow, Maria married Juan Madariaga in 1844."

"His widow stayed, even though she preferred the lively Monterey society... She added to her ranch holdings by purchasing what was known as Rancho Canada Honda - Deep Canyon - and then marrying Juan Madariaga in 1844.
By 1846 Maria had found a small house in Monterey... She sold the four-thousand-acre Pescadero property for five hundred dollars - just twelve cents an acre. Sometime in 1860 she sold her Deep Canyon property ...
Maria lived her life in the house on the small lot in Monterey she named Casa Madariaga. Monterey's historic Casa Madariago - Maria del Carmen Garcia Barreto Madariaga's old home - is on Abrego Street between Church and Webster."
