      After Clemente Castro [Maria Antonia's father] died, Clementina Montero [Maria Antonia's mother] is shown to have married again in 1839. Whether she married a Rodriguez between Castro's death in 1817 and that marriage of 1839 is not determined
      The unavailable Mission Santa Cruz registers might so disclose. At any rate, the often encountered use of the mother's surname can account for the Montero surname and a step-father's, at the time of her marriage, may account for the Rodriguez. There is a possibility too that she was raised as part of a Rodriguez family, there being several in Branciforte where, it seems, she grew up.
