There they waited until January 28, 1800, when they traveled to San Blas to board the frigate Concepcion for California. The children were accompanied by the girls' teacher from the Casa, Maria de Jesus Lorenzana. She, too, had been abandoned at the Casa and had lived her entire life there. Maria was not just a teacher to the children; she was probably more like their mother. That may be why the director of the Casa had maria give up her position and travel to California with them. She was expected to remain with the girls in Monterey.
