Member Of Old Family Succumbs
--
Mrs. Petra S. De Verdugo, born on Verdugo Homesite in 1846, Answers Last Call
--
In the death yesterday of Mrs. Petra S. De Verdugo at her residence, 115 East Grand avenue, San Gabriel, Los Angeles County loses a member of one of the oldest families in this section. Mrs. De Verdugo was 79 years of age, and had been ill for some time.
Born in the old Verdugo homestead north of Glendale, July 4, 1846, she knew the Verdugo Hills section when vaqueros herded cattle over the hills and valleys which now are dotted with populous residential cities and beautiful homes. She became the wife of Jose Maria Verdugo, son of Julio Verdugo and grandson of Jose Maria Verdugo, who obtained from the King of Spain the original grants of land known as the Ranchos San Rafael and La Canada. The cities of Glendale, Eagle Rock and Burbank have sprung up in those grants during the more recent years.
Mrs. Verdugo was beloved for her charitable work among the poor and needy. She was a devout Catholic and a member of the old San Gabriel Mission, having resided in the immediate vicinity of the old church during the last twenty-seven years. She leaves two daughters, Inez Verdugo of San Marino, Cal., and Mrs. Ramona Mendibles of Glendale; and six sons, Manuel Verdugo, Los Angeles, P.S. Verdugo, Glassel Park, Los Angeles, and Jose M, Julio and Thomas Verdugo of San Gabriel.
The funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday with High Mass at the old San Gabriel Mission. Interment will be in the old mission cemetery adjoining the church, where many members of this distinguished old family are buried. The body will be in state at the San Gabriel Mission until the time of the services.
