      1781 RIVERA EXPEDITION
      Jose Xavier Cortez enlisted as a settler in October 1780 but he apparently died at Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico. His widow, Maria Nicolasa Ramirez, continued on to Alta California with her children. She married Guillermo Soto on 27 July 1781 at Mission San Gabriel; Soto was a 1781 soldier with Rivera's Expedition. There are Cortez descendents.

Sus testigos son Agustin Leyba, 41, soldado de cuera del Pueblo de Tepic, Juan Victorino Feliz, 30, soldado de cuera del Real de Cozala. Los case y vele en 27 de dho mes y ano, siendo testigos de su libre y espontaneo consentimiento,Jose Antonio Parra, 25, soldado de cuera, y su muger Maria Isabel Talamantes, naturales del Real de Cozala." Cruzado.
