- CORRECT FATHER OF Maria Zenobia Arguello:
UNSUBSTANTIATED, but MOST LIKELY, this Jose Antonio Francisco Arguello is the correct father of Maria Zenobia Arguello.
He is the only Jose Antonio Arguello with this name found in the Los Angeles area during the time of her birth.
Records that list Maria Zenobia Arguello's father as Jose Antonio Arguello:
1. Family bible/personal papers; list her parents as Jose Antonio ARGUELLO and Juana Maria AVILA
2. L.A. Plaza Church marriage record:
1122) Jan 30, 1871- SALVADOR GRIJALVA, 38, natl. de Hermosillo, of Manuel y Candelaria Chaira, with MARIA CENOBIA ARGUELLO, 22, natl. de L.A. of Jose Antonio y Juana Quinto.
3. Zenobia Arguello Grijalva's death certificate lists her parents as Antonio Arguello and Juana Avila.

- POSSIBLE IDENTITY(IES) OF LISTED FATHER, MANUEL SERRANO for Maria Josefa Serrano and Maria Leandra Serrano:
The father could be Manuel Serrano (Msn. San Gabriel Bap. 1799), brother-in-law of Juana Quinto Zuniga Montalvan's sister Josefa Antonia Montalvan.
- Josefa Antonia Montalvan married Leandro Serrano (Msn. San Juan Capistrano Bap. 1785).
- Leandro and Manuel Serrano's parents are Francisco Serrano and Maria Balbaneda Silvas.
Another possibility is that Manuel Serrano is a name made up to protect the identities of the REAL fathers of Juana's two daughters:
1. Manuel Serrano could ACTUALLY be Jose Antonio Arguello for 1843 baptism:
- Maria Josefa Serrano is MOST LIKELY the same person as her listed sister Josefa Zenobia Arguello.
--Maria Josefa Serrano May 1843 baptism record lists father as Manuel Serrano.
--Josefa Zenobia Arguello was born about 1843 according to the L.A. 1844 Census (her baptism record cannot be found), and her father is later listed as Jose Antonio Arguello.
Juana Quinto Zuniga Montalvan BAPTIZED ALL her children, so this would substantiate the possibilty that Josefa Zenobia Arguello and Maria Josefa Serrano are the same person
2. Manuel Serrano could ACTUALLY be Leandro Serrano for 1845 baptism:
- Juana Quinto Zuniga Montalvan was living with her sister and Leandro Serrano in the L.A. 1836 census.
- Juana Quinto Zuniga Montalvan named her daughter Maria LEANDRA Serrano (L.A. Church Bap. 1845). A possibility that the child was named after her father, LEANDRO Serrano.
These examples could substantiate the possibility that Manuel Serrano is not a real person, but a name made up to protect the actual fathers' identities.

BIRTH
...One widow who experienced such humilation was Anastacia Zuniga, an angeleno, who had an extramarital relationship with a carpenter from Mision San Gabriel, Jose Antonio Ramirez. The liaison resulted in the birth of a daughter in 1818.
After appearing in church with her head and eyebrow shaved, the governor ordered the Comandante Militar Jose de la Guerra y Noriega, Los Angeles's comisionade (a military official with authority over local affairs), to remove her to the presidio of Santa Barbara and place her in seclusion in a casa de honor for six months. She was obliged to serve in the household and "lead a religious life as a Christian woman."
Ramirez, in contrast, only had to labor for one month on public works. The governor encouraged him to marry Zuniga and, if he refused, to pay for the child's support.
