FAMILY PLACEMENT
Per Dorothy Mutnick: The placing of Gregorio Tapia in this line is based totally upon circumstantial evidence. None of the people in that evidence are identified by their mother's name. Since there are often distinctly different people with the same name commonly used, there can be a mistaken identity.
One of these whose identity may be mistaken is Ygnacio Martinez. Aniceta Ygnacio Martinez y Buelna, son of Bernabela Antonio Buelna y Tapia - thus grandson of Maria Ana Antonia Tapia y Hernandez - was younger and a distinctly different Ygnacio Martinez from Ygnacio Martinez, Comandante at Presidio San Francisco.
None of the evidence used to help place Gregorio in this family precludes the comandante but points toward the former Ygnacio.
If the surmised identities, in brackets, herein are correct, Greorio was probably also a descendant of a Tapia y Hernandez - See note (5) Tapia y Hernandez. A baptism at Santa Cruz suggests that he was a brother of Mauricia who was said to have been baptized at Villa de Branciforte. If this is so, his father as projected was the brother of Maria Antonia Tapia on Font's list. The first mention in the file of Gregorio is when he was padrino with Ana Maria Martinez y [Buelna], a granddaughter of Maria Ana Antonia Tapia y Hernandez.
Ygnacio Martinez y [Buelna] and [his niece] Bernabela Amezquita y [Martinez] were padrinos for Gregorio's first child in file. Mauricia Tapia y [Maria Jesus] was madrina for a daughter of Maria Josefa Martinez y [Buelna] MOB [Monterey Baptism] 4/15/1841. On the other hand if Mauricia was Gregorio's sister, it is strange that she was not madrina for any of his children in file. It is indeed possible that Gregorio was of the line begun by one of the other Tapia y Hernandez sons who have no identifiable entries in file.
