DEATH: ERRONEOUSLY listed as being buried in 1845 Santa Barbara by Marie Northrup
"Per Jonathan Cordero, family descendant: "Juan de Parma DID NOT die in 1845 as claimed in Marie Northrup's Spanish-Mexican Families of Early California.
The error occurs in the reading of Juan Cordero's death record. What looks like "de Parma" in the death record is actually "de pena", shorthand for "Penitencia" (penitence). See the notation on the Huntington death record: "Penitenci a, Viatico y Santo Oleo" -- basically, it means he refused to repent and to take the sacraments before death.
Further, Juan Cordero, son of Miguel Cordero, was listed as alive in January 1876 in court documents.
I have eliminated the possibility that he was one of the other sons as well (all the other sons are accounted for)."
