BIOGRAPHY
Rosario was the last speaker of the Obispeno Chumash language. She was a fieldworker with 19th century linguist and anthropologist John Peabody Harrington.
NOTE: Taken from Handbook of North American Indians: California, By William C. Sturtevant, page 523
"In 1914-1915, Rosario Cooper, the last Obispeno speaker, described witchcraft cured by fasting, singing, scarifying, and bloodletting; beliefs in the sun, moon, stars, bear, and coyote; and dances associated with the swordfish and coyote, the former with a feather costume. An offering or feathers, beads, and tobaco was thrown to the swordfish at Avila. She knew a game played with wild walnuts filled with brea, and material culture items such as a broom made from split juncus stalks, sleeping mats, a foxskin quiver, and use of white clay as a shampoo (Harrington 1914-1915)."
