DEATH AND BURIAL
Maria Eugenia Ynes Robles Castro
Birth: 1796, Mexico
Death: Jun. 1, 1867
Santa Cruz County, California, USA
Maria Eugenia Inez Robles was a infant when she arrived on the schooner Conception in Monterey Bay on May 12,1797.Her parents were Jose Antonia Robles and Gertrudis Merlopes. Her father was one of the "los fundadores de California".She grew up in Branciforte and lived here as well as at other missions in California during her married life.
These photos show the mass reburial site for the remains from the cemetery at Mission Santa Cruz.In 1885 in preparation for the building of the new Holy Cross church six wagon loads of remains and some tombstones were removed to here and reburied in a mass grave.Almost certainly many were left behind and there are broken gravestones behind the church today(2009).
Many of those who were buried there are the early Spanish/Mexican first settlers of California.Inez Robles de Castro and many of her family were among them.
