      #64) July 8 [1856]-. Habian traido los restos del cuerpo de MR. THOMAS RETTINTON, (WRIGHTINGTON) vecino de este Pblo. el que estaba casado con Juana Machado, natl. y residente de este Pueblo,
      los vecinos Mr. Gual (Wall) y Mr. Will, manifestando haberlo hallado en una Canada, perteneciente al Rancho de Santa Monica, llamado comunmente El Cosoy, a una legua de distancia de la Misn. de S. Diego,
      en donde murio y fue comido su cuerpo por los animales. Haviendo enterrado los restos la tarde del mismo dia 5 en qe. llego en el Cementerio de este Pueblo de S. Diego, companando dhos.
      restos la poblacion y el mismo Sr. de Pedrorena segun me manifesto iba rezando algunas oraciones propias a este objeto hasta la llegada en el Cementerio.
      El mismo joven me manifesto qe. murio sin recibir ningun Sacramento como se refiere su muerte, y se hizo su entiero por no hallarse presente en la poblacion para hacerse sepultura eccla. el Cura Parroco de dho. Pueblo
      el R. P. Misionero Apostolico Juan Chrisostomo Olbein de la Orden de los Sagrados Corazones de Jesus y de Maria, por hallarse entonces administrando la frontera en la Baxa Califa. por Orden del Illmo. Sor. Arzobpo. de San Francisco
      Sr. Jose Sadoc Alemany. Dicho joven me manifesto de haberle hecho presente a dho. mi antecesor la muerte y entierro del finado Tomas Rettington y como dhos. RRs.
      PPs. segun me consta por mi mismo qe. le encargaba de muchas cosas le decian que no haviendo Sacerdote en el lugar que le pueda dar la correspondiente sepultura eccla.
      qe. le podia ir rezando el rozario y otras oraciones a los cuerpos qe. se llevaran a enterrar, sin ninguna ceremonia
      ecclesiastica, dando aviso dho. joven de todos las personas qe. murieren y fuesen enterradas, asentandolas pa. el govierno del espresado Cura Parroco en su ausencia del Lugar. etc.

The remains of the body of Mr. Thomas Rettinton, resident of this city, who was married to Juana Machado, native and resident of this city, Mr. Gual (Wall) and Mr. Will residents declared they found in a ravine/canyon on part of the Santa Monica rancho, commonly called the Cosoy [probably part of the old Cosoy Indian rancheria] one league from Msn. San Diego, where he died and his body was eaten by animals. Having buried the remains the afternoon of the same day 5 in the cemetery of the city of San Diego.
