- NOTE: Although the below book mentions that this John Martin and John Martin (husband of Basilisa Bernal - http://www.schwaldfamily.org/getperson.php?personID=I26465&tree=RodSchwald ) are the same person, this John Martin's last recorded real estate transaction occurred in 1857, while John Martin, husband of Basilisa Bernal is listed as dying of cholera in 1850. This is definitive proof we are talking about two separate John Martins.
JOHN MARTIN LIVING TWO LIVES WITH TWO WIVES:
CHAPTER XXIX Rancho San Ysidro
... "Don Ygnacio's [Ortega] adobe house ... a frame addition was made to this house, probably by his friend, the Scotch carpenter named John Martin, who later married his granddaughter, Maria Basilisa Encarnacion Bernal y Ortega. ...
His friend, John Martin, seemed to live two lives successfully.
He first married a Cantua girl who lived on the San Ysidro, in 1826 at San Carlos.
In 1835 he married Maria Basilisa Encarnacion Bernal y Ortega, daughter of Maria Raimunda Ortega de Bernal and granddaughter of Ygnacio, at San Jose.
He then continued to live with both wives,
with the first wife in Marin County, where he was the grantee of Corte Madera de Novato,
and Santa Clara County with Basilisa, grantee of the Embarcadero de Santa Clara (now the site of Alviso)."

BIOGRAPHY
Marin County, California
#9-10 John Martin
Born: ca 1787-8 in North Shields, Co. Northumberland, England, the son of Thomas and Mary (Smith) Martin - Called the "old Scotch carpenter"
Immigration/Migration: Arrived in California in 1822 on the whaler "Orion" that also brought William Richardson. He left the ship and in 1824 joined the church at San Juan Bautista and was baptized there. In 1826, he married a native woman, Maria Tomasa Antonia Dominga Cantua, at Mission San Carlos de Monterey, afterward settling at the San Francisco Presidio. By 1832 he owned a league of land in Sonoma at the junction of San Antonio Creek and Petaluma Creek; he built a house, farmed, and sold horses to the San Rafael Mission. Indian attacks caused him to move in 1837 to Corte Madera de Novato where he was granted two square leagues of land (Hicks Valley was a part of this grant). ...
