BIOGRAPHY - ALDEN FRENCH (dated 1922)
- Birth: Born on the old French Ranch on November 2, 1879
- Father: Mortimer D. French, a native of Wisconsin, who died in 1906, age sixty-six, and was buried on the day before the great San Francisco earthquake
- Mother: Mary Gallagher, a native of Santa Clara County, who died in 1911, age fifty-seven years. (daughter of Andrew Thomas & Maria (Martin) Gallagher, and the granddaughter of Andrew T. & Mary (Siskron) Gallagher, of New York.)
SCHOOL & BUSINESS
- 1883: His parents & siblings moved from the French Ranch to San Jose, where Alden attended grammar school & two years of high school.
- 1898-1907: Employed by the Southern Pacific Railroad Company, in charge of their store room in San Jose.
- 1907-1919: Employed by the Walsh-Col Wholesale Company of San Jose in various departments.
- 1919-current (1922): Employed as foreman in the mgmt. of the Gallagher Ranch located on the San Jose-Alviso Road (purchased by Andrew Thomas Gallagher in the fifties) in which he also has an estate interest.
The Gallagher Ranch had about 123 acres, additional land was added, now totals about 360 acres. One-third is devoted to the growing of pears, somewhat more to apples & 110 acres are given up to pasture, berries and hay.
Packing houses are near-by, employing from twenty-five to fifty men. Sixty or more carloads of pears & six to eight carloads of quinces are shipped annually.
Mr. French also has an estate interest in a fifty-acre-ranch located on the Mountain View-Alviso Road (left by his father) which is devoted to pasture and hay.
FAMILY
- Residence: Lives about two miles south of Alviso, on a part of the Gallagher Ranch, although also own a home at 438 North Sixth Street, San Jose.
- Marriage: October 18, 1904, San Jose, married Anna M. Purcell, a native of San Jose, and the daughter of John and Delia Purcell.
Wive's Parents & Siblings: Mrs. Purcell (nee Teresa Gorman) was born in Australia & came to San Francisco at the age of twenty. She moved to San Jose in 1868 & two years later married Mr. Purcell. Three of their seven children are living; 1. May, wife of Joseph Calice, mgr. of Black's Package Co., San Jose; 2. Anna (wife of Alden French); 3. Naomi, wife of Alfred J. Pinard.
Mr. Purcell, past superintendent of San Jose streets, died in 1900.
- Wife and Children: Four of their children are still living - 1. Mildred Gertrude, 2. Alden Edward, 3. Mary Martha & 4. Mortimer Alfred French; but their second-born, who was also named Alden, passed away aged eleven months.
