- NOTE: Although the below book mentions that this John Martin and John Martin (husband of Tomasa Cantua - http://www.schwaldfamily.org/getperson.php?personID=I26239&tree=RodSchwald ) are the same person, this John Martin is listed as dying of cholera in 1850, and John Martin, husband of Tomasa Cantua had his last recorded real estate transaction in 1857. This is definitive proof we are talking about two separate John Martins.
JOHN MARTIN LIVING TWO LIVES WITH TWO WIVES:
CHAPTER XXIX Rancho San Ysidro
... "Don Ygnacio's [Ortega] adobe house ... a frame addition was made to this house, probably by his friend, the Scotch carpenter named John Martin, who later married his granddaughter, Maria Basilisa Encarnacion Bernal y Ortega. ...
His friend, John Martin, seemed to live two lives successfully.
He first married a Cantua girl who lived on the San Ysidro, in 1826 at San Carlos.
In 1835 he married Maria Basilisa Encarnacion Bernal y Ortega, daughter of Maria Raimunda Ortega de Bernal and granddaughter of Ygnacio, at San Jose.
He then continued to live with both wives,
with the first wife in Marin County, where he was the grantee of Corte Madera de Novato,
and Santa Clara County with Basilisa, grantee of the Embarcadero de Santa Clara (now the site of Alviso)."

HISTORY: RANCHO EMBARCADERIO DE SANTA CLARA - (map image on web site)
The Old Port Alviso
"Prior to Alviso, the Embarcadero de Santa Clara was functioning as a port.
The Embarcadero de Santa Clara was the site of the first Santa Clara Mission in 1777. In 1779 the Mission moved to higher ground, but the Embarcadero continued as an "embarkment" point for goods shipped from the Santa Clara Valley to San Francisco and beyond.
The Embarcadero de Santa Clara served as a port for the shipment of cow hides, tallow, and other goods marketed by Spanish settlers and the Mission de Santa Clara. In 1835, Richard Henry Dana, author of Two Years Before the Mast, purchased hides from the Mission, loaded them onto a boat at the Embarcadero, and relayed them to his ship in San Francisco Bay.
Some sources state that Alviso was called Embarcadero de Santa Clara before being renamed Alviso . . . close but no cigar. The Embarcadero is located almost a mile up the Guadalupe River from the site of Alivso proper, as indicated on the map. It is a different place."

BIOGRAPHY - IMAGES of America ALVISO SAN JOSE, Robert Burrill, Lynn Rogers, p. 20
RANCHOS AROUND ALVISO. During the Rancho period (c. 1822-1850) boundaries were large rocks, cliffs, gullies, creeks, and rivers. People told where they lvied based on the rancho or who owned it. What we call Alviso today fell within three ranchos:
RANCHO RINCON DE LOS ESTEROS ...
RANCHO ULISTIC ...
RANCHO EMBARCADERO DE SANTA CLARA (port or landing) lay in the Northern Alviso area. Granted by Governor Pico to Barcilia Bernal in 1845 (and upheld by Roosevelt in 1936), it occupied a small triangle (only 196.25 acres) of land. Here padres and rancheros loaded agricultural products onto boats. This was the last Mexico land grand to receive a United States patent. (RB)
